Danielsson Flyreels have manufactured fly fishing reels of the highest quality for over 20 years; reels that have brought good fishing luck to fly fishermen all round the world. Nowadays, our reels are simply called Danielsson, but the function and quality are the same. Danielsson are fly reels of the finest quality.

Danielsson CONTROL - New revolutionizing reel series from Danielsson.

Danielsson Innovation AB has developed a new reel series called Control, which will revolutionize medium-to-heavy fly fishing. Thanks to a number of innovations, Control reels significantly improve user-friendliness, reliability, and the odds of successfully playing and landing big, powerful game fish.

Explanation: At first glance, Control reels appear to function like typical anti-reverse fly reels: when fish run the drag system lets out line without the reel handle turning. There the similarity ends, however. Whereas in traditional anti-reverse reel systems cranking power never exceeds braking power, Control reels incorporate a unique power converter that automatically increases resistance (drag) when you crank the handle, and reduces drag when you let the handle go. By pairing maximum cranking power with the ability to immediately reduce tension when fish jump or make sudden, lunging runs, incidents of broken tippets, shattered rods and bent hooks can be minimized – chances of landing trophy tarpon, sailfish or salmon maximized.

How it works: The multiple disc clutch type brake is developed from our earlier systems, and has proven to be very reliable under harsh conditions. The main drag knob and a fine-tuning knob allow for extremely precise drag settings. The big news, however, is the fighting brake, which automatically significantly increases the drag setting as soon as the handle is cranked a mere 1.5 centimeters; stop forcing the handle and the brake immediately reverts to the original drag-knob setting. Because of this engineering breakthrough, anglers no longer have to let go of the handle when fighting fish, providing hitherto unattainable levels of control.

Example: When fishing for Tarpon it is important to brake hard during the run. After the run he will be airborne, and under these high jumps there is a high risk that he will cut the leader. A Tarpon fisherman tries to prevent this by leaning forward, giving him some slack line. With this movement he gets another 1.5meters less line tension, but the fish might be 250meters away so the effect is minimal. If you instead could rapidly decrease the brake, much of the tension would go away.
This is exactly what our reel does: when the Tarpon jumps, you stop forcing the handle and much of the tension goes away. Your chances to land that dream fish just went sky high. The power converter also has a built-in safety guard that prevents the reel from getting overloaded. Too many reels break under extreme stress – in other words, at the exact moment anglers rely on them the most. With Danielsson’s new Control reel, we can’t guarantee you won’t lose the occasional big one; but we can guarantee it won’t be because of reel failure.

Other features:
- Control reels afford the unique benefit of having the handle on the frame side. This prevents the risk of finger injuries from rotating spools: remember, some species can run at speeds up to 100km/h.
- Control reels are waterproof to 100 meters, another important feature of reliability. By placing the handle on the frame side we only need two sealant rings, minimizing idle friction.
- The frame-side handle also makes changing spools a breeze, as opposed to the complicated, time consuming chore typical of other anti-reverse reels.
- The overall mechanical feeling is smooth and tight; just cranking the reel is highly addictive.
Twenty-five years ago we began making large fly reels capable of tackling some of the world’s most explosive game fish. With Control, we now raise the bar yet again, changing the way large reels are designed and manufactured, and more importantly, how they work to make fly fishing more user-friendly, reliable, and effective.

Danielsson Original

Danielsson Original Flyreels are not likely to need any introduction. The Danielsson Original set a new standard for fly reels when it was released in 1983 and it began the large arbor revolution. As a result, the Original - which other manufacturers rushed to imitate for it's superior concept - is now the most copied reel in the world.

This simple and by now classic design offers easy, trouble-free handling. The light weight, large diameter spool counters the risk of spool overrun and at the same time makes for fast line retrieval. Risk of losing a fish is minimised, which makes possible the use of very light tippets on shy fish. The large arbor concept is no longer new, but the Danielsson Original is still the absolute favorite among many expert fly fishers.

Specifications:
  • Frame and spool of high strength aluminium.
  • Other components in stainless steel and Delrin®.
  • Low spool weight that prevents overrunning.
  • Low total weight and good balance.
  • Fast line retrieve.
  • Easy-clean design.

Danielsson FW, LW or HD

These models set a new standard for modern fly reels

For the latest generation fly reels Danielssons wanted to create a drag system able to withstand any fishing situation. The new reels had to be tough enough to handle anything from extreme temperatures to sand and salt water. Additionally, they had to be be easy to handle, require a minimum of maintenance and, of course, be great looking.

It was also important that this new generation of Danielsson reels reflect the basic ideals and technical principles of the large arbor reel revolution.
After extensive testing Danielssons finally had a design that could stand up to the highest mechanical and aesthetic demands. Danielssons are not afraid to say that these reels take fly reel design to it's next level, and are the most functional on the market today.

Specifications
  • Waterproof for complete reliability. All three models have been tested in a pressure chamber and in a dishwater with a water temperature of 90 degrees Celsius.

Technical feature details and solutions behind Danielsson drag system (Series FW, LW, HD)

  • No reel with a drag system that's not completely waterproof can be reliable.
    • Danielssons solved this problem by incorporating high quality industrial grade seals on every mobile exterior part that could come into contact with dirt and/or water. They expected the reel to manage at least one hour in the dishwasher at 90 degrees Celsius without leaking, which it did without problem. The reel was also tested in a pressure chamber at pressures equivalent to a depth of 330 feet without leaking. This means you can plunge your Danielsson reel in the water without loosing any functionality. After introducing these reels to the market, a number of other manufacturers began to claim that their products were waterproof, but only a few of them can manage the tests.

      Sealants (black color)

danielssons guarantee that the drag system and bearings are completely sealed against water and dirt for any of the normal situations you'll encounter as a fly fisher.

  • The drag works smoothly in all situations, regardless of high or low temperature, without changing brake torque.
    • To design a drag that maintains the chosen torque setting, the drag material cannot be flexible. (If the dimension changes with temperature etc., the torque will be changed). Neither can the drag be lubricated, since lubrication introduces inevitable friction changes as temperature, load and rotation speed change. Cork was therefore completely inconceivable.

The experiments led to a carbon composite, stable up to 2000° C and extremely wear resistant. The advantages of this choice are obvious: the brake torque stays invariable independent of rotation speed and temperature. This decreases the risk of breaking a leader, fatigues the fish faster and gives you better control so you can concentrate on the fish and not on adjusting the drag.

It's impossible to design a good drag system without sealing it. Reels with drag systems that aren’t properly sealed can be used in dry conditions, but when the drag comes in contact with water the friction changes dramatically. Water planing can be the result and with that you lose control of the fish. Since Danielsson reels are completely sealed they still maintain all their functional qualities when wet.

      Bearings

  • Spool-changing system
    • Changing spools is fast and easy. The reels make us of an ingenious system, without loose parts, that provides easy change and a positive connection between spool and frame.

  • Spool
    • The spool itself is designed with the same fundamental ideas as the Original: Danielsson reel: light and strong with a low rotating mass. This design also means that extra spools cost only 35 % of the price of the reel, Spools from many other manufacturers can cost up to 50–60 % of the price of the reel.

  • Easy Left to Right Hand Wind Conversion.
    • Read our step-by-step description and you can change the retrieve direction quite quickly.

  • Choice of material.
    • The reels are made from high tensile strength aluminium and stainless steel. The surfaces on the aluminium parts are anodised, and can be used in salt water. Technical standards for aluminum used outdoors require anodizing to a thickness of at least 20 µm. Some other manufacturers have made their surface highly lustred, which limits the thickness of the anodized layer to 10 µm. Danielsson reels are anodized to a depth of approximately 22 µm and still have a fine lustre.

  • Low total weight.
    • Danielsson reels are designed to use the optimal amount of materials, making for strong, light reels with a low rotation mass..
